About

Maura Falfan (Mexico City, 1973) studied her MFA at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY (2008-2010) and her BFA at the National School for Painting, Sculpture and Etching (ENPEG) La Esmeralda, Mexico City (1996-2001). She has been showing her work since 1993, focusing primarily on the two-dimensional surface (painting and photography). The idea of the vestige as a sign referring to an absence has been the subject matter of her work. Understood as a mark, imprint or gesture, the vestige has taken the place of a scar, an absence, and more recently: the presence of the nonexistent. Through the use of the stain as an empty signifier, Maura has developed a body of work that can be characterized -in formal terms- as being either abstract or directly factual. Interested in the possibility of transformation and personal catharsis, she has welcomed an ominous quality in her work and promoted a sense of mystery through the use of an enclosed symbolism and a particular atmosphere. Maura has recently participated in the following shows: Horror en el Trópico, Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City (2014-2015); Nation II At the Alamo, Sideshow Gallery, Brooklyn, NY (2014); SCOPE New York 2014, New York, NY (2014). Selected exhibits include: Wunderkammer II:paisajes, Nina Menocal Gallery, Mexico City (2005); Barajar y dar de nuevo, A la pared, Carrillo Gil Museum of Art, Mexico City (2006); Dust in the Wind, Ramis Barquet Gallery, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon (2006); Looking Like Something to Look At, Mumbo Jumbo Gallery, New York, NY (2006); It’s a Wonderful Tenth, Sideshow Gallery, Brooklyn, NY (2010); Traces, ECOH Gallery, Mexico City (2011); In The Flat Field, Flanders Gallery, Raleigh, NC (2011); and Paradise Lost, 210 Gallery, Brooklyn, NY (2012) In 2001 she obtained the Grant-Residency Taller-exposicion de Pintura Iberoamericana, Parque Ferial Juan Carlos I. IFEMA, Pabellon I., Madrid, Spain. She has been awarded the Grant Beca de Jovenes Creadores-, National Fund for Culture and Arts (Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes FONCA), Mexico City in 2002-2003 and 2005-2006. She participated in the 2012 and 2013 Governors Island Artfair and was part of the 2014 Artist in Residence Program there; that same year formed part of New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), ArtePreneur Professional Development Program, New York, NY. She currently lives and works in New York City.
